Self-care during the Holidays

How do you want to feel this Holiday season? At The Villij, we acknowledge that the holidays look different for everyone. And, one thing is for sure: Everyone needs care this season.

So, while you learn to exist in a time that may feel overwhelming, here are a few self-care reminders during the holiday season.

It’s Not About Your Worthiness

The holiday season doesn’t define your worthiness. While this may be a wonderful time of the year for some people, it isn’t for everyone. You might be spending time alone, or surrounded by family and friends, in situations that may or may not feel good. Nevertheless, you’re always enough.

Be Mindful of Your Experience

You’re allowed to choose how you wish to experience the holidays. You’re free to embrace old traditions or start new ones, and decide what, where, and with who you spend your time and energy.

Selective Sharing

Be selective with your sharing. While connection might be a big theme for you this season, remember that you can decide what topics you’re comfortable sharing and which ones you wish not to share at the dinner table. It’s ok to say, “I don’t want to talk about it” without providing a reason.

Proceed with Care

Don’t stretch yourself too thin. Be mindful of your mental health, emotional capacity, and financial budget. Saying “Yes” to things and people you wish you didn’t will eventually cost you. Get comfortable with rescheduling and canceling plans, as well as saying “Thank you, but not right now”.

Self-soothing activities for the Holidays:

  • Enjoy a game night with friends

  • Watch your favorite childhood movies

  • Try new recipes

  • Get outside

  • Call and/or see loved ones

  • Take a social media break

From our Villij to yours, may you have a gentle holiday.
